Why them
In 1850 flamenco was not a show yet. There was no stage, no ticket, no artists. It was what you did at the end of the day, at home and in the courtyard, to let out what you were carrying. It became a profession later, with the cafés cantantes.
We work with the earlier one.
Mérimée took his inspiration from them to create the famous character of Carmen, the cigarrera.
The real ones were in their thousands, they earned their own wage when almost no woman in Spain did, and they worked twelve to fourteen hour days. They worked in ranchos: tables of six to twelve, with one woman answering for the work of them all.
In 1834 they created their own relief society. Sick leave, a doctor and maternity leave, paid for among themselves.
The beauty of the cigarreras came from their strength.

The flamenco of 1850 was not learned. It was used.
Every step of the experience is designed so that you live the origin of flamenco first hand: the way we had here, in Triana, of expressing and sharing a feeling as a group. And that produces wellbeing straight away.

Any experience that creates knowledge, belonging and real human contact produces emotional wellbeing straight away. You do not have to chase it: you have to design it.
I am Mariángeles Bracero Reina. Sevitonina comes out of my two trainings: Chemistry and applied Neuroscience —under the direction of Dr Nazareth Castellanos—, Pedagogy, and my studies at the Conservatory of Spanish Dance.
I did not design a wellbeing experience. I designed a way for someone from outside to step, for a few hours, into how this city is. The wellbeing came on its own. And now we know why.
You do not come here to learn a choreography. You come to use flamenco the way it was used: to say what does not fit in a sentence. For that you never had to know how to dance, only to feel and to express.
I invite you to leave your watch outside, breathe orange blossom and look each other in the eye for an hour. Whatever comes out of that, comes out on its own.
